Meet Ali Salihi, the owner of West 3 Glass a local glass shop and glazier specialising in cutting and fitting all types of glass and mirrors.
Hi Ali, tell us about West 3 Glass. How long have you been trading and how did you get into this business?
We are a family run business and specialist glaziers and glass suppliers for both the commercial and domestic sectors. My uncle set up the business 20 years ago, I have worked in it for quite some time and have recently taken over as director and owner.
How did Covid-19 affect your business?
We were lucky that we could still deliver some of our services, as many people were stuck inside we could still offer (for example) window replacement services without any contact with clients. As glass is a niche industry we don’t follow common business trends and sales can be very irregular, so we are very used to experiencing these fluctuation and adapted our services to provide what we could. We are pleased that we can now offer all of our services.
How are things looking for the future? Are you feeling positive.
We feel positive and confident and are hopeful that things will start to stabilise. Actually, we are seeing many people having spent time at home during lockdown, are wanting to do home improvements and starting new building projects.
What do you feel is your biggest challenge as a small business?
Biggest challenges as a small business is the uncertainty of how much business will come through the door. Ours is a needs based business so it’s always difficult to predict how things will change. All industries have been affected and its difficult to know how much it will affect our business from both the supply side and the customer demand side going forward.
How do you spread the word about your business?
Partnerships and referrals are key for a business like ours. We like to work with local builders and interior designers to provide bespoke services. We also like to give the best service we can because that is is very important. We don’t like to see victims of cowboy installs which then incur additional and unnecessary expenses. Making large renovations and changes to buildings can be scary for first timers and industry jargon can be intimidating. At West 3 Glass we will always do our best to make terms simple and easy to understand, so the customer is comfortable and informed. We often help our customers by referring them to good trustworthy builders – so partnerships work both ways.
